Respond: Physio-led Hatha Yoga and Slow Vinyasa

Open to all, beginners welcome.

“Respond” classes with Jane Leslie are Physio-led Hatha Yoga with modification options to meet changing needs and slow Vinyasa optimal for joint health.

Respond Yoga classes are designed to meet you right where you are, responding to your ability in each asana (pose). This is an enjoyable practice where you are working to your edges WITH, not against yourself.

Whether recovering from surgery or an injury, managing arthritis or osteoporosis, or just looking for guidance to maintain a healthy lifelong practice, Jane will guide you in moving safely to calm, open and strengthen body and mind.

With an alignment-oriented approach, Jane incorporates, strength, balance and flexibility in asana and sequences to promote joint health. Mindfulness and breathing practices flow the class together and we relish in some restorative time and meditation at the end.

The Respond classes have both strong and gentle elements, with options to do more or do less as suitable for you. They are open all levels of experience and beginners are welcome.

Props (chair, wall, blanket, straps, blocks, bolster etc.) are used where necessary to facilitate correct alignment and thus develop more body intelligence and balance. While there are lots of chair options in the class, you will need to be able to get up and down from the floor (using a chair as support to do so will work, too).

She brings a scientific and Clinical Pilates base to her teaching, along with a deep respect for Yoga philosophy. Jane’s approach concentrates on precision and alignment on a base of functional core stability. She has a strong belief in both supporting and empowering each person with the tools needed to create positive changes in lifestyle, posture and movement.

Jane is a practicing physiotherapist with 20 years of experience. Having worked in public, military and overseas aid physiotherapy, Jane moved into private practice in 2001 with a focus on Clinical Pilates and mind-body approaches to therapy. She became a Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher in 2008 while living in Hong Kong, and has taught specialized yoga in Hong Kong, Melbourne and Perth for pre and postnatal women, teens with joint conditions and for arthritis and osteoporosis. In 2014, she completed Yoga for Arthritis ™ training in Baltimore and has since continued to provide an evidence-based yoga program at Arthritis and Osteoporosis WA and taught arthritis modules at Yoga for Pain Care Australia teacher trainings.

Jane’s physiotherapy practice is informed by training in several styles of Clinical Pilates, most notably the neuromuscular approach of DMA Clinical Pilates, woven with pain science and yoga knowledge. She currently sees clients at Wisdom Physiotherapy (Nedlands) for injury rehab; pre- and post- operative (hips, knees, spinal); chronic pain; postural strain; arthritis (and related conditions); osteoporosis (including post fracture, balance and falls prevention); pre- and post-pregnancy and tweens and teens (esp. hypermobility and chronic joint diseases).

Jane’s “Respond” Yoga classes at Yoga Moves draw from this background. She invites students to explore their abilities and find enjoyment in their practice and the wide-reaching benefits of regular yoga.
